যেসব শব্দ Noun বা Pronoun-এর পূর্বে বসে তার সাথে বাক্যের অন্যান্য শব্দের সম্পর্ক দেখিয়ে দেয় তাদেরকে Preposition বলে।

সাধারণ Preposition গুলো হচ্ছে: at above, across. against, among, after, before, beside below, behind, beyond, between, by, down, for, from, in, into, like, near, of, on, over, outside, out, since, to, towards, through, up, upon, with, within, without.
গঠন, কার্য এবং ব্যবহারের ভিত্তিতে Preposition-কে ছয় ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়। যথা :
i. Simple Preposition

v. Participle Preposition and
vi. Disguised Preposition.
A recent investigation by scientists of the US Geological Survey shows that strange animal behavior might help to predict future carthquakes. Investigators found such occurrrences in a ten-kilometer radius of the epicenter of a fairly recent quake. Some birds screeched and flew about wildly: dogs yelped and ran around uncontrollably. Scientists believe that animals can perceive these environmental changes as early as several days before the mishap.
In 1976 after observing animal behavior, the Chinese were able to predict a devastating quake. Although hundreds of thousands of people were killed, the government was able to evacuate millions of other people and thus keep the death toll at a lower level.
Simple Preposition :
Simple Preposition মূলত একটি word দ্বারা গঠিত হয়।
যেমন: at, on,off, of প্রভৃতি।
দুটি Simple s Preposition একত্রে যুক্ত হয়ে একটি Preposition- এর মতো কাজ করলে তাকে Double Preposition বলে।
যেমনঃ Upon (up + on), within (with + in) প্রভৃতি ।
Noun, Adjective Adverb-এর পূর্বে simple Preposition যুক্ত হয়ে যে Preposition গঠিত হয়, তাকে Compound Preposition বলে।
যেমনঃ about (on + by + out), behind (by + hind)
Present Participle অথবা Past Participle, Preposition-এর মত ব্যবহার হলে তাকে Participle Preposition বলে।
যেমন—
Past - The man went past me.
Regarding - I know nothing regarding this matter.
কখনো কখনো on, at, of, per prepositions-গুলোর পরিবর্তে a বা o ব্যবহৃত হয়। এ রকম a এবং o-কে Disguised Preposition বলে।
যেমন—
He gets up at 8 o'clock (0 = of)
They went a hunting (a = on)
Interrogative Adverb, Interrogative Pronoun বা Relative Pronoun-এর সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্ট Prepositions, Sentence-এর শেষে বসে। এ ধরনের Preposition-কে Detached Preposition বলে।
যেমন:
What are you looking for?
Where have you come from?
Here is the pen (that) you asked for.
This is the book (that) I was thinking of.
Prepositions of time মূলত ব্যবহার করা হয় কোন কিছুর সময় বোঝাতে অথবা কেউ কিছু কখন করবে সেটা বোঝাতে। এ ধরনের কিছু Preposition হলো: At, on, in, while, during etc.
যে preposition কোনো কাজ ও কাজ সম্পাদনকারীর মধ্যে সম্পর্ক নির্দেশ করে তাকে preposition for agent বলে ।
